Flaming Gorge Days gets the postcards. The parade rolls, the concert wraps, the fireworks fade, and by the last Sunday in June a lot of towns would call summer done. Green River is different. The calendar between the last week of July and the middle of August is where this town actually spends its energy, and if you already live here, that stretch is worth pacing on purpose instead of stumbling into.
What follows is a resident's read of what's coming, where it lands, and how the pieces fit together. Consider it a planning tool, not a tourism brochure.
The Wednesday anchor
Before any weekend event, there is the midweek reset. The Green River Farmers Market runs downtown on North 1st Street East, in front of the Tomahawk Building, and it has kept a steady Wednesday cadence through the summer. It's small. It's the kind of market where you talk to the person who grew the tomatoes, then walk two blocks to the Clock Tower Plaza and eat them on a bench. If you're trying to time errands and dinner around one downtown stop this month, Wednesday afternoon is the answer.
July 25: the quietest event on the calendar
The Green River Pond and Garden Tour on Saturday, July 25 is the kind of event a lot of residents miss because it doesn't advertise itself with a stage or a beer garden. It's a self-paced morning walk through private yards and water features around town, starting at 9 a.m. If you have spent any part of this summer wondering what grows here without a fight, this is the tour that answers it. It's also the last low-key weekend before the calendar tightens.
August 8: two very different reasons to be at Expedition Island
Saturday, August 8 stacks two events on the same island, and they don't overlap the way you might expect.
The 5K/10K Race starts at 7 a.m. It's a road race that uses the Greenbelt Pathway loop and the streets around the island for its longer leg. If you run, you already know the route. If you walk your dog on that path most mornings, plan around it.
Later the same day, the island hosts a USS Sanctioned Strongman Competition. Same park, entirely different crowd. The setup includes the heavy implements that come with sanctioned strongman contests. Bring a chair. It's the kind of event most residents don't realize is happening in their own backyard until they walk past a car flip on a Saturday afternoon and put the pieces together.
Expedition Island is a National Historic Landmark, designated in 1968 for its role as the launching point for John Wesley Powell's 1869 and 1871 river expeditions. It's also the park where your neighbor's kid is probably going to try to deadlift a stone next month. Both of those things are true at once, and that's what makes the park worth paying attention to.
August 14–15: the weekend everything happens at once
This is the weekend the whole month bends toward. Two events run in parallel on Expedition Island, and a third pulls the crowd to Evers Park. If you only pick one weekend to be downtown this August, this is it.

A few things about this weekend worth knowing before you show up.
The Cajun shrimp boil, put on by the Green River Chamber of Commerce, is ticketed by seating time. You pick a 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. dinner slot when you buy in. The Chamber offers a "Canoe" portion at roughly a half pound of shrimp with potatoes, corn, and sausage for $20, and a "Boat" portion at roughly a pound for $30, with a two-Boat "Date Night" bundle at $55. To-go boxes are available if you'd rather eat at home and come back for the fireworks. This is not a walk-up-and-order operation, so if you want in, buy the ticket ahead.
Art on the Green is the event most non-artists overlook, and it shouldn't be. Put on by the Green River Arts Council at the Expedition Island Pavilion, it's a 24-hour live competition where painters and sculptors work in front of the crowd from Friday into Saturday. If you have kids who have never watched an oil painting come together in real time, this is the closest they'll get without a studio visit. Bring them at two different points in the day and let them see the change.
The Car & Bike Show at Evers Park, hosted by the Sweetwater Rodders, sits on the Saturday of the same weekend. Cars, trucks, and motorcycles from vintage to new are welcome. If you show a vehicle, contact organizer Larry Erdmann at 307-871-8639. If you're just there to look, walk over from the island after the Duck Race and you'll be in the middle of it.
Run with the Horses is now in its 23rd year, and the marathon course circles the Wild Horse Loop Tour east of town. Even if you're not running, know that the marathon route touches the roads you might otherwise use to drive to White Mountain that morning. Give it a couple of hours.
What locals actually plan for
If you have lived here a summer or two, the mechanics of this stretch matter more than the marketing copy. A few practical things:
- The Wednesday farmers market is your low-friction downtown trip. Save the crowded events for the weekend.
- Buy shrimp boil tickets in advance through the Green River Chamber if you want the 5 p.m. seating. The 6 p.m. slot tends to hold longer.
- If you park a car on the island for the River Festival, expect to leave it there through fireworks. The lots at the Green River Recreation Center at 1775 Hitching Post Drive and along the Greenbelt Pathway are your fallback.
- The Art on the Green competition runs overnight. Coming back at 10 p.m. Friday to see what the painters look like six hours in is a genuinely different experience from showing up Saturday afternoon to see the finished work.
- The Duck Race at noon Saturday is one of the few events where you do not have to be present to win. Buy a duck, then go do something else on the island. The Chamber will find you.
Why three weeks matters more than one
Small towns often get evaluated on their single signature event. Flaming Gorge Days is the one Green River gets remembered for. It is not the one that actually says the most about the place. The stretch from July 25 through August 15 shows the town in its working mode: a Wednesday market that keeps time, a garden tour that assumes you care what grows here, an island that can hold a strongman contest and a live painting competition in the same week, and a Chamber that still runs a shrimp boil with two dinner slots because that's how many their volunteers can serve properly.
That's the version of Green River worth planning around. Mark the dates on a paper calendar. Tell the neighbor who moved in over winter. Buy the shrimp boil ticket now while the 5 p.m. slots are still open. The rest of the month will handle itself.
